New Hamburg ROMEOS Calling

The original purpose of the group was to bring together new neighbours who had moved from other parts of the Province of Ontario and also from other Provinces of Canada to our community of New Hamburg.

Initially the group was only composed of men from one street of the community but it has expanded to other areas as the need required. Initially the ROMEOS were run as a unique and isolated entity because the members had not been exposed to or were aware of the Organization's history and development. It only adopted the ROMEO name when it was found and referenced in a novel read by a member's wife.

The founding members then proceeded to allocate 'call signs' to each new participant based upon the Greek alphabet, Alpha to Omega, and grant a scroll to the new members.

Presently, we have 20 members as of January 1, 2013. This reflects a fluctuation of new and removed members from our inception. We may have to find a new alphabet very soon to maintain newer 'call signs'!!

Meeting Ray - August 26, 2013

Today we visited Ray at the Forest Heights Residence in Kitchener.

It was an overcast day and Joan and I felt it would not be a good time
to take Ray outside. Instead we found a Tim Horton's and from the
drive-thru we picked up a tea that Ray could enjoy.

When we got to his room he was sleeping on top of his bed and after
a few minutes we woke him to say hello. It took a little while for him
to get his bearings after his nap but he soon became aware of our visit.
Joan helped him with the tea which was still warm and he drank it while
sitting in his chair. Even though it was a short visit, it was good to see
our friend and fellow Romeo. I reminded him that while he was at Freeport
his Romeo friends had taken him for lunch at Borealis in Cambridge.
He said that he remembered that and we talked about doing it again when
the Romeos are doing lunch at a restaurant in the area.

Towards 12:00 noon we walked Ray to the dining room and said goodbye
after he was seated at his table.

It was a nice visit and hopefully it will not be too long before we see him again.

Romeo Lunch, August 22, 2013

Today the Chapter of the Romeos drove to Stratford to dine
at Crabby Joe's Restaurant on Ontario Street to enjoy a lunch
and fellowship.
Eleven members were in attendance which was organized by Beta.

After drinks were served and our orders taken our newest member,
Harry, was formally greeted to the Chapter by George, his sponsor
and presented with his Romeo certificate recognizing his status and
call sign as 'Eta'.
It was also good to see John Fenwick who has been busy lately in
rebuilding an older type classic RV.

Beta provided his joke of the day and opened the floor for more.
Both Ken Mulholland and George added to the joke list.
Dennis advised the group of his experience lately with his smoke
detectors being programmed for 7 years use at which time they will
continually annoy you with a beep sound until they are replaced.
Fortunately, some of the members were aware of this problem.

Carl has been given good news by his surgeon on his leg and is
taking therapy at Freeport twice per week. It's good to see him partake
of the lunches at this time which he handles well with the assistance
of the members when it is required.

The New Hamburg Chapter is indeed fortunate to be composed of
such a fine group of men. This is 'a band of brothers' to be sure.

Romeo Lunch, August 8, 2013

Our Romeo Luncheon was convened at The Williamsburg Arms in Kitchener.
This is one of our favourite eateries and it is just the right distance for a pleasant drive.

The weather has warned up after a colder spell and it is quite pleasant.

A total number of 10 members attended including Carl who is recovering from
surgery and John Matthews who is also feeling better after his treatment.

After our initial toast, Beta entertained the group with some good jokes.
No one wanted to try to top them. Well done, Ron.

Our young and pleasant waitress took our lunch orders and the group relaxed
by talking to their fellow Romeos about the latest news and gossip. One of the
topics, even at this time of the summer, was where various members would be
vacationing in the Fall and Winter. It seems that the top areas would be Hawaii
for a couple of members and of course Florida and Arizona for others.
George and Lynn have booked a trip to Italy this year with friends from Stonecroft.

When lunch was served, the pub started to fill up and we were happy to have arrived early.

All in all, we enjoyed our outing, where the friendship of neighbours means so much.

Our thanks to all the drivers for their efforts.
